St. Paul in the Desert Episcopal Church 7. THE PROPHET DANIEL

King Belshazzar had a great feast for a thousand of his lords. In the midst of this, a hand appeared writing on the wall, "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin" -- which no one could translate, and which greatly frightened the king. Daniel, because of his great works, was brought in and interpreted the words to mean: God hath numbered thy kingdom and finished it; thou are weighed in the balance and found wanting; thy kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

8. THE NATIVITY

This window shows the Star of Bethlehem with its radiant beam, which guided the Magi to the manger.

The shepherd's crook reminds us of the first visitors to our Lord.

The frankincense, chest of gold, and the myrrh, are the gifts the wise men brought to the infant Jesus.

The word Nativity literally means the Mass of Christ; therefore, the celebration of the birth of Christ through the Holy Eucharist.

St. Paul in the Desert Episcopal Church 9. FLIGHT OF THE HOLY FAMILY INTO EGYPT

This window portrays the journey from Bethlehem into Egypt of Joseph, accompanied by the Blessed Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus, after the visit of the Magi. It was undertaken in obedience to an angelic message to enable the child to escape the hostility of King Herod. After the death of Herod, the Holy Family returned to Nazareth where Jesus grew to maturity.

10. THE CHILDHOOD OF JESUS

Joseph and Mary were pious Jews, and it is evident throughout biblical writings that theirs was a close family life. Joseph was the village carpenter, and in His early life Jesus worked with His father.

Later, Saint John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the River Jordan.

Throughout His childhood, Jesus spent much time in the synagogue studying under the teachers who were impressed with His knowledge and intelligence.

Once He was in the synagogue with his teachers when His parents were returning to Nazareth. When they rebuked Him because they had not been able to find Him, He replied: "Do you not know that I was bound to be in my Father's House?"

St. Paul in the Desert Episcopal Church 11. THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

Mark 1:9-11
And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized of John in the river Jordan.
And straightway coming out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descended upon Him:
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

12. THE CRUCIFIXION

At the time of Christ, nailing people to a cross was the accepted way of executing persons convicted of extreme crimes.

To Christians, the crucifixion of Christ represents His final act of love for all humanity. In this sacrifice, He assured the redemption of man for all time. So the cross has become the symbol of our faith in that assurance. Saint Paul said, "We preach Christ crucified."
