This window celebrates the central doctrine of the Christian religion. "On the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures." Saint Peter proclaimed the Resurrection in his first sermon: (Acts 2:36) "Therefore, let all the House of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ."

14. THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Christ said, "I am the Good Shepherd, the good shepherd is the one who lays down his life for his sheep . . . I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father."

"There are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and these I have to lead as well . . and there will be one flock, and one shepherd."

The Sermon on the Mount is the Lord's discourse in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, which sets forth the principle of Christian ethic. The Ten Commandments are the law as converted from Jewish Law. The Lord's Prayer is the model of prayer. The Beatitudes describe the qualities of Christian perfection.

In preaching the Sermon on the Mount, Christ told His followers:

"You are the Light of the World."

16. FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND

Jesus feeds the body and soul. The important point of this story is not the numbers fed, but the reason of the feeding. The fragments of bread and fish represent the old Israel, which Christ gathers and makes new. The broken bread is the shared love of God. This miracle is remembered as the first experience of Christ's future gift of Holy Communion.

17. THE PRODIGAL SON

This parable vividly and dramatically describes repentance. Sincere confession of sins and return to the father are essential and concrete expressions of the son's desire and renewal of life and love.

While the older son stayed home dutifully working with his father, the younger son went off and squandered his inheritance. He returned destitute and truly repentant. He was joyously greeted by his father, with rich garments and a feast. The father solved the older son's resentment in saying: "You are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life, he was lost and is found."

18. THE GREAT COMMISSION

Sometimes known as the Divine Commission, this is the missionary mandate of Christendom, and an apostolic authority, which connects the present church with the apostolic church, and with Christ Himself.

Christ said to His Disciples: "Go forth and make all nations my disciples; baptize men everywhere in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time."

Pentecost is from the Greek word for fiftieth, since the festival was kept fifty days after the beginning of Passover. It marked the end of the harvest. It was at this time that the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles who were gathered in the upper room.

"From the sky came a voice like a strong wind . . . and there appeared to them tongues like flames of fire, resting on each one. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit."
