20. SAINT STEPHEN, THE FIRST CHRISTIAN MARTYR

Saint Stephen was the first Deacon. He took part in preaching, and performed miracles, thus incurring the hostility of the Jews. They accused him before the Supreme Council in Jerusalem, where he pronounced that Christ was the prophet (announced by Moses), whom the Jews had killed. Incensed, his accusers had him stoned. He died confessing Christ and asking forgiveness for his persecutors.

Saint Philip is shown baptizing the Eunuch in the river. This baptism is the first recorded individual expansion of the Word of Jesus to the outside world. Philip is not only guided on this journey by the Holy Spirit, but the Ethiopian, having heard the Good News of Jesus, requested baptism.

22. MARY OF BETHANY AT JESUS' FEET

Mary is shown sitting at the feet of Christ listening to His every word. The beginning of each Christian life is in the hearing of the Word. Mary represents the contemplative life, while her sister Martha, working in the kitchen, represents the active life.

The companionship of Jesus is expressed in adoration and worship.

Saint Peter is known as the Prince of the Apostles, and in any list of the Twelve he is always first.

On the Day of Pentecost, Peter preached to a crowd in Jerusalem, the other Disciples standing with him. He convinced the crowd that, "the House of Israel can be certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ."

On that day he converted and baptized 3,000.

24. SAINTS PETER AND JOHN WITH THE LAME MAN AT THE GATE

The lame man lay every day at the gate of the temple as people entered for the hour of prayer. Peter said to him: "Look at us. I have no silver or gold, but what I have, I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." He pulled the man up who then started to walk, leaping with joy, entering the temple, praising God.

25. SAINT PAUL

By his earlier Jewish name of Saul, he had persecuted Christians; but while traveling to Damascus, he heard the voice of Jesus saying, "I am Jesus and you are persecuting me.* Go now into the city and you will be told what to do."

In Damascus, the Lord sent Ananias to baptize him, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit. Like Paul, he joined the disciples and began preaching in the synagogues.

* These words, through their identification of Christ with His followers, contain in essence the future characteristic Pauline doctrine of the church.

26. THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS CHRIST

"At the world of command, at the sound of the Archangel's voice and God's trumpet call, the Lord Himself will descend from heaven; first the Christian dead will rise, then we who are left alive shall join them, caught up in clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Thus shall we always be with the Lord."

In the historic creeds, the Second Coming of Christ denotes His return, not in lowly human birth as in His first coming, but in glory to judge the living and the dead, "whose Kingdom shall have no end."

This is a completely abstract rendering of leaded glass. Its beauty rests in the color and in the movement and flow of the design. It is a meditative window having individual meaning to each viewer who receives from it what each needs at that particular moment.

Executed by the John Wallis Studio of Pasadena, California.

Donated in 1965 by the Parish Guild of Saint Paul

All text and photos are from the book "Miniatures in Meditation," written by Charles E. Brown.
